Container - Presentation Day
We were each given a piece of writing to examine with the brief to design a container which encapsulated the theme of the piece of writing.
The piece I read was about Utzon’s Paradigm and my container reflected my understanding of this. It was formed from clay which cracked exposing the true nature of the material. Over time this will continue to degrade an since the tutorial it has been placed outside to allow further change to occur. I plan to record the changes throuhout the year.
The concept of the container is that it protects the tree. I chose the bonsai tree as it represents the influence Utzon had from other cultures, in particular from his asian travels. I would have liked to use a cherry tree as Aalto makes reference to the cherry tree in his writings. he suggests that it is beautiful because every flower is the same but different. Unfortunately this was not possible due to economies of scale.

Chichester Cathedral
I went to Chischester Cathedral to explore the notion of church. At the time I went I had not yet determined anything about my project but I am interested by churches and the ways in which people use them. In this case it is largely a tourist attraction but the rituals which come with religion and the ways in which they affect people are fascinating.
As a child my memories of church are visiting my grandmother’s local church at Christmas time. I did not understand many of the rituals but the image of the church as a christian place with symbolism of God is something that has stuck with me and is something that needs to be challenged.

Pecha Kucha
These 20 pictures were delivered as a pecha kucha presentation at the beginning of the year and represent my architectural interests. I am fascinated by the process of change and my pecha kucha was focused on the progression of buildings towards ruins and the way in which this is influenced by nature.
